Your bike is gone from the rack, or there’s persistent trouble on your street, and you reach for the phone, but which number, and is it even a “police” matter? Getting this right in the Netherlands matters. Here is when to call 112, when to use 0900-8844, and how to file a report that actually helps.

112 vs. 0900-8844

The first rule. 112 is for emergencies only: a crime in progress, fire, or immediate danger to life or safety, when help must come now.

For everything else, a stolen bike, reporting overlast (nuisance), or asking where to file a report, you use 0900-8844 (the police’s general number) or report online. As the police explain reporting a stolen bike, you can file at politie.nl/aangifte or call 0900-8844 to ask how.

Reporting a stolen bike: the framenummer

Here’s the detail that decides whether you ever see your bike again. As the police explain what information to bring, the framenummer (frame number, engraved on the underside of the frame) is essential: only with it can police return your bike if it’s found.

As the government’s stolen-bike guidance notes, filing an aangifte (within 7 days) also enters your bike into the stolen-bike register, which helps recover it and catch the thief. So note your framenummer now, before anything happens.

Aangifte vs. melding

A useful distinction:

DutchWhat it is
aangifteformal report of a crime (e.g. theft)
meldingnotification (e.g. ongoing overlast)

You file an aangifte for your stolen bike; you usually do a melding for nuisance. For anonymous tips about crime you can use Meld Misdaad Anoniem (0800-7000), separate from the police. And note that for many crimes you can now file the aangifte fully online in your own time, which also produces a written record you’ll need for an insurance claim, your inboedel- or fietsverzekering will almost always ask for the police report number before paying out.

The bottom line

In the Netherlands, 112 is for emergencies only; for a stolen bike or overlast, use 0900-8844 or report online. File an aangifte within 7 days and always include the framenummer, without it a recovered bike can’t be returned to you. Use a melding for nuisance, an aangifte for a crime. Frequently asked questions

When do I call 112 vs 0900-8844 in the Netherlands?

Call 112 only in an emergency: a crime in progress, a fire, or when life or safety is at immediate risk and the police, ambulance or fire service must come now. For non-urgent matters, a stolen bike, reporting nuisance (overlast), or asking where to file a report, call 0900-8844 (the police’s general number) or report online. Using 112 for a non-emergency ties up the line for real emergencies.

How do I report a stolen bike to the Dutch police?

File an aangifte (official report), online at politie.nl/aangifte or via 0900-8844, within 7 days of discovering the theft. Crucially, include the framenummer (frame number, engraved on the frame); only with it can the police return your bike if it’s found, and your report enters the bike into the national stolen-bike register. Have your bike’s details and, if insured, your policy ready.

What is the difference between aangifte and melding?

An aangifte is a formal report of a crime (like theft) that asks the police to investigate and can lead to prosecution; you make it for your stolen bike. A melding is a notification of something the police should know about, like ongoing overlast (nuisance), that may not itself be a crime. For nuisance you usually do a melding; for theft or a crime against you, an aangifte.
