Most of daily life runs on a small, repeating set of sentences. You do not need fluency to order, pay, apologise, ask someone to slow down, or get your hair cut the way you wanted. You need about forty phrases and the confidence to use them badly at first.

Start here: the everyday set
Dutch phrases for Amsterdam expats is the practical starter set: the ten words of day one, the polite words that do the heavy lifting, the café, the checkout, the tram, and a section on what to do when people answer you in English. It works everywhere in the language area, not only in Amsterdam.
Two small things punch above their weight. Agreeing in Dutch is not just ja: saying yes and agreeing in Dutch, jawel, klopt and precies covers the register of agreement, including the jawel that contradicts a negative. And getting a floor number wrong will send you to the wrong door: the Dutch begane grond is the ground floor and the eerste verdieping is the one above it, which is not what an American expects. Sound: the g, and the vowels
The g is the sound expats dread, and the good news is that there is no single correct one. The split runs along the Waal and Maas rather than the Dutch-Belgian border, with the scrapey uvular harde g above the rivers and the gentler zachte g below them and in pockets of the Veluwe and Achterhoek. Shops, services and getting what you asked for

Phone Dutch removes lip-reading, context and the chance to point at something, which is why it feels disproportionately hard. Automated menus are worse still: listen for toets (press) and the digit, and open with spreekt u Engels? the moment a human answers.

Students and the office
